Sporting Predictions, 2025

A few years ago, race analyst Paul Jones ran an excellent sporting events prediction competition. I quite like the idea and thought I'd resurrect it.

The competition is as follows: we now have 16 participants who have entered and made a series of predictions about big events this years, across various sports (horse racing, football, tennis, rugby union, rugby league, cricket, darts, F1, snooker and a few special events).

Each event has a points award for the winner and runner-up. Some events are harder (e.g. the Cesarewitch winner months ahead of time) than others (the Ryder Cup) and so receive more points. You can see a full list of events and their points allocated at the bottom of this page.

Throughout the year, points will accumulate based on your predictions. I'll calculate the points and update the leaderboard on this page every month or so.

Prize pot

  • The winner will receive £80

  • The runner up will receive £40

  • Third place will receive £20

  • Fourth and fifth place will receive £10 each

Rules

  1. Forms and your fee need to be paid by the midnight on the 13th January 2025. Any forms after this date will be rejected and any entry fee sent after this date will be refunded and your form rejected.

  2. One entry per person only, and you may only make one prediction for each event. If you make more than one prediction, I will accept only the first one entered in the form. I will try to be reasonable and generous with any typos. However, see Rule 7.

  3. Should your selection finish 1st or 2nd in the relevant competition, you will receive the points allocated below.

  4. I think the final event listed is the PDC Darts World Championship in early January 2026. If any event has not completed by this final date, then it will be deemed void and removed from the competition.

  5. In the event of an event tie (e.g. a dead heat in a horse race, or joint placings in a golf tournament), all joint placings will receive their full allocation. If an event features a play off for the winner, that event will determine the winner and the runner up. In the event of joint winners, any “runners up” will not receive points (as they essentially finished 3rd or lower).

  6. I may make some errors. Please email me to point them out and I will correct any reasonable errors.

  7. However, editor's decision is final.

  8. If two or more people finish the competition with the same number of points, they will share any awarded prize money between them and the person below them will finish two places below. E.g. two joint winners will receive a half each of the combined 1st and 2nd place prize money, then the next in line will finish 3rd.

  9. This is intended as a fun competition. I do not have an entry and I am doing it for some fun for subscribers and friendly sports fans throughout the year. If you're rude or hostile to me or anybody else involved, I reserve the right to remove your entry.
